IF Cowdenbeath can put together back-to-back wins for the first time this season, when they travel to play Edinburgh City this Saturday, it could make all the difference to their chances of avoiding the dreaded bottom spot in Ladbrokes League 2 and the relegation play-offs.

The Blues closed to within one point of Clyde with the win over the Bully Wee on Saturday and four of Edinburgh City, so there is all to play for.

While Cowden are at Meadowbank on Saturday to play City, Clyde will entertain promotion play-off hunting Annan Athletic, so if the Blues could rack up a first back to back win situation this season, they could move clear of the bottom slot for the first time in three months.

Cowden boss, Gary Locke, has seen his team collect ten points in six games since his arrival and if they can keep that form going it could see the Blues scramble clear of trouble.

He said of the Clyde game: “It was never going to be a classic football wise because there was an awful lot at stake but I was very pleased with the way we handled their style of play.

“They wanted to get the ball in to our box as quickly as possible and it meant that we had to work really hard on our defensive technique.

“It was encouraging to get another shut out and the three points has given us a light at the end of the tunnel.

“Yes there is still a lot of hard graft needed, but the team is working hard as a unit and it has brought three good performances in a row for I felt we deserved to take something from Annan.”

The scorer of the winner, Dale Carrick, was pleased with his contribution: “It was the sort of game that was going to be won by the first goal so when I got into that position with just the ‘keeper to beat I kept telling myself to keep cool to ensure I steered it past the ‘keeper.

“We have closed the gap but we know that there is still a long way to go to our target of avoiding the play-offs but we are working hard for each other and we know we will have to repeat that at Edinburgh City this coming weekend.”

Mr Locke will have to take on City without skipper Scott Rumsby. The centre-half is suspended for this one but he feels they have cover: “I have been pleased to field the same team three games in a row but Scott is out for this one although I feel we have the cover to cope.

“David Syme, Liam Henderson or Jamie Pyper can play centre-back and we have people on the bench who can step in to fill the gap created.

“It is another cup final but then every game is going to be like that between now and mid May.”
