COWDENBEATH Bowling Club opened the 2017 season on Saturday with the usual President versus Vice-President game, writes Jack High.

President, for his second year, Mitch Drysdale, welcomed members, new members, sponsors and visitors from Broad Street, Lenzie and South Queensferry on a beautiful day.

Angela Reekie was selected to throw the first jack by Mitch as his wife was unavailable.

Angela was presented with a lovely bouquet of flowers by committee member Tam Johnson. The new committee were introduced to the members prior to the game.

Cowdenbeath managed to win the Fife wide Gilmour Trophy last year. The winners were presented with commemorative badges.

The scores, which, according to Mitch did not matter... (oh, really)... were as follows, with the President's rinks first, E McMillan 10 M Heenan 19, R Reekie 10 D Duff 7, L King 9 D Leitch Jnr 19, A Johnstone 9 P Graham 16, D Leitch Snr 10 A Sommerville 12 and Mitch Drysdale 14 Lindsay Black 14. This lead to a 87-62 win for vice president, Lindsay Black.

The sweep winners were the teams closest to six after six ends, as drawn by new member Ina Young. No-one in the president's team had reached six, but Lenny King's rink of Linda Duff, Tam Johnson and George Beattie were closest.

For the Vice President Angela Reekie, Alan Leishman and Peter Graham were on six shots so won. A special mention must go to Mick Heenan assisted by Davie McKay and their helpers for making the green play so well at this point of the season.

A lovely meal was served and Nicky Keys replied for the guests. Entertainment was supplied and most members and guests stayed for the duration. A special request was made for Mitch Drysdale, Lindsay Black, Bobby Reekie and Andy Johnstone to perform 'How lucky can one guy be' which was first performed at Mitch's Daughter's wedding two years ago. They duly provided this, which went down very well.

Next week's home fixture against Methilhill is already full. Please keep an eye on our facebook page for regular updates.

This was a great start to the new season. Hopefully Cowdenbeath's success of previous years will continue.

Saturday saw the start of the 2017 bowling season at Lochgelly BC get off to a sunny start.

The opening of the green competition saw the president against the vice-president. This year’s president Willie Glasgow addressed all the players before the activities on the green commenced. A minute's silence was held for all those members that had sadly passed on this past year.

The first jack was rolled out by this year's Ladies captain Margo Mitchell to get the games underway. While some games were closely contested others were not so close.

The scores were as follows: Rink 2- G Aitken, Z. Muir, W Glasgow 11 S. Olszok,R. McQueen, M. Connelly 5; Rink 3- A. Mitchell, J. McAdam, C. Kinnell, M. Adams 11-I. Simpson, A. Paton, D. Scott, J. Sinclair 3: Rink 4 – M. McGhie, G. McGhie, T. Muir 15 A. Greenhorn, S. Izatt, A. Hodge 2; Rink 5 - E. Fernie, L Scott, E. Connelly, I. Watson 9 C. Johnston, S. Paton, A. Bruce, M Mitchell 9.

The final result after 10 ends played was President 46 Vice-President 19.

All the Players enjoyed the time spent on the green and then proceeded inside for a meal catered by the Ladies Section.

The Lochgelly bowling Club is still looking to sign new members for the season so anyone wishing to join can contact the Club for more information. Young and old are most welcome.
