THERE was drama at Dundonald and Hill of Beath on Saturday which ended up seeing Kelty Hearts’ lead at the top of the McBookie.com East Super League cut.

Meanwhile Lochgelly Albert, Lochore Welfare and Crossgates Primrose were all winning their games.

Dundonald Bluebell 2,

Kelty Hearts 1.

A BRILLIANT second-half fight-back gave Dundonald Bluebell all three points which ensures they will be a Super League team next season but it put a little dent in Kelty’s title hopes.

Short of their normal central defensive partnership through suspension, Dundonald had to patch up their rearguard and in the early stages of the game Hearts probed the Bluebell defence but the first real chance came at the Kelty end with Kyle Marley making a good save.

Kelty were desperate to get an early lead and Bluebell ‘keeper James Lennox made two excellent stops to keep the scores level.

However, the game was flowing from end to end and both teams had chances to take the lead with Hearts twice forcing home defenders to boot the ball over their own bar for safety.

Neither side managed to hit the net in the first half hour and Dundonald’s makeshift defence was doing well in the glorious sunshine, but a minute from the break a piece of slackness saw an attempted clearance go straight to Hearts’ Jordyn Sheerin who managed to steer the ball past Lennox from the edge of the box.

The second period took on the same flow with both teams getting forward but the best chance fell to Hearts with Brian Ritchie’s shot being brilliantly parried by Lennox.

Bluebell were always in the game and in 73 minutes they drew level. A long pass stretched the Kelty rearguard and former Bluebell defender Murray Carstairs fell over and handled the ball and from the resultant penalty Lewis McKenzie sent Marley the wrong way to square matters and set up a thrilling finale.

Bluebell were getting the ball forward whenever they could after this and with six minutes left they won a free-kick 30 yards out and from it Scott Lawrie curled an unsaveable shot into the net.

Hearts came back at Bluebell and in the closing minutes it was all hands on deck at the back for Dundonald and Lennox made a fine save from Shaun Greig to ensure the points were staying at Moorside.

The result has taken Bluebell on to 35 points and in to the safe zone but with Bonnyrigg Rose pulling off a dramatic and controversial late win at Hill of Beath, the Kelty lead over the champions is now 20 points, but with the Lothians side having seven games in hand.

It is still a tall order for Bonnyrigg but Hearts will not want to lose many more games.

Meanwhile Bluebell boss Stevie Kay was delighted with his team’s all round show: “Our defensive shortages are well documented but the lads at the back battled hard for the club against the run away leaders.

“Yes we could have avoided their goal but the boys came back superbly after the break and Scott’s winner was quite a finish.

“All in all a very proud day for everyone involved with the club.”

Hill of Beath Hawthorn 2,

Bonnyrigg Rose 3.

AHEAD going in to time added on, Haws felt they were going to take something from the champions at Keir’s Park but then came an amazing three minute spell of play.

It all added up to the home team finishing with nine men but there was also controversy.

Hill of Beath made a fine start to the game and they grabbed the lead in 16 minutes when Aaron Hay’s low cross was perfect for Calum Adamson to fire home the opener from close range.

Rose had plenty of the ball but home ‘keeper Stuart Hall was not being over worried although on the half hour the game flared up when Haws’ right-back, Russell Grierson, picked up two yellow cards within the space of seconds and was sent-off.

Haws got to the interval one up then in 55 minutes Hay cut inside his marker and sent a fine shot wide of the ‘keeper to make it 2-0.

The ten men were defending brilliantly but in 65 minutes Bonnyrigg pulled one back after a slip-up by a Haws defender.

However, within minutes Adamson ran through and made it 3-1, he thought, only for the linesman’s flag to see the ‘goal’ chalked-off.

Then the little forward ran clear again of the Rose cover defence and was heavily fouled but the referee adjudged it a booking rather than a red card and as the game went in to time added on Bonnyrigg levelled the score from a free-kick and then Haws’ Shaun Leishman was red carded for dissent.

The short-handed Haws found themselves under siege in the closing seconds and Bonnyrigg used their manpower to full advantage by grabbing the latest of late winners.

Hill of Beath manager Bobby Wilson felt his team were hard done by: “We certainly did not deserve to lose that one.

“Losing Russell after just half an hour was a big blow but we battled away and Calum’s pace was causing them all sorts of problems and the tackle on him when he was trying to get clear, could have seen them reduced to ten.

“However, as things became chaotic near the end they got the two goals which gave them the points.

“It was very disappointing from our point of view but the team really fought hard and deserved something from the match.”

Easthouses Lily 1,

Lochgelly Albert 5.

THE Berts got back into action after weeks on the sidelines through the weather and despite being short of regulars, were always in charge of this South Division game.

The Albert resources were stretched and they only had one fit player to sit on the bench, but they made a good start to the match and John Ferguson set up Lewis Elder who fired them ahead.

However, Lily came back at them and a hand ball incident involved Lochgelly’s John Duffy gave them a penalty which was converted to square things.

Then Easthouses hit the bar but the Berts were soon back on the attack and Elder’s pass set up Jack Wilson who fired them in front and in 39 minutes Martin Rennie benefited from the good work of Elder to make the break score 3-1.

The former Dundonald front man was posing Lily no end of problems and in 58 minutes Elder set up Wilson to add number four and finish the game as a contest.

In 75 minutes the hosts were reduced to ten men and Wilson took advantage to add another and complete his hat-trick as Berts went nap.

The Albert are now on 34 points with five games in hand over top team Blackburn United who are 25 points ahead, however, if they keep winning a top three finish is on.

Kirkcaldy YM 1,

Crossgates Primrose 3.

AFTER a long losing run Crossgates got back to winning ways at Denfield with a really good show.

However, they had to bounce back after going a goal behind in only four minutes as YM struck incisively.

It did not take Primrose long to start calling the shots though and in 14 minutes Stuart Donaldson levelled the game.

This set the visitors on the way to victory but at the interval the scores were still level.

The second period saw Crossgates take over and Liam Forbes fired them ahead in 58 minutes.

It was all about Primrose now and with 22 minutes to go an OG made the points safe and there could have been more late on but the result pushes them on to 17 points from 20 games and has them in 11th place.

Brechin Vics 2,

Lochore Welfare 3.

A FINE win for Welfare which took them off the bottom of the North Division.

It was a good all round performance from the young Lochore side who had to respond positively to losing a very avoidable goal.

The first period produced chances but at the break there were no goals.

Five minutes into the second-half Kevin Brown put Lochore ahead but within two minutes Vics levelled after a defensive error.

On the hour Welfare regained the lead when Keiran Hicks headed home from close in and it helped settle Lochore.

Ten minutes later Hicks was pulled down in the box and James Adam converted from the spot and there were openings for Lochore to grab a fourth but several good saves defied them. However, with the last kick Vics got their second but that was that and Welfare moved off the bottom.
