THERE was disappointment for Cowden-Gelly boxers as they competed at the recent Boxing Scotland Elite and Youth Championships.

Cowdenbeath's Bradley Innes, of Glenrothes Boxing Club, and Cardenden star Lyndsey Robinson were in action at the event, which took place at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell over the weekends of March 11-12 and 18-19.

Innes, who was listed in the Youth 2000 categories at 60kg and 64kg, fought in the latter weight against Rob Roy ABC's Baha Al Jamal in the quarter-finals but lost out on points, while Robinson lost out in the women's elite 54kg semi-final to Stephanie Kernachan of Cleland Boxing Club.

Although the duo missed out on their respective finals, Central Fife will be represented at the Elite Championship Finals on April 1 when Lochgelly star Emma McCulloch goes for glory in the women's light flyweight 48kg final.

The Glenrothes Boxing Club fighter will go up against Lochend's Nasreen Anderson fresh from winning at the Golden Girl Championship – Europe's biggest tournament for female boxers – in Sweden at the start of last month.

Glenrothes coach Stevie McGuire said: "Bradley lost on points; he had already beaten the boy in our home show and the guy went on to win the final. It was a close fight but unfortunately he lost out on the final.

"But we are the only Fife club to have boxers in the Elite finals, and the only one in Scotland two have two female boxers. Efiy (Efiychia Kathopouli) and Emma are in the finals; Emma is raring to go. She's meeting a girl who is from London but is registered with Lochend, and she's also looking forward to the GB Three Nations with Scotland, Wales and England in May."

Meanwhile another of McGuire's charges, Kelty middleweight Connor Law, returns to action on Friday night at Meadowbank Stadium.

The 24-year-old puts his 100 per cent winning record in the pro ranks on the line when he takes on Cameroon-born Frenchman Francis Tchoffo on the undercard of Josh Taylor's Commonwealth Super Lightweight bout with Warren Joubert.

McGuire added: "His preparation is going well. He's been doing plenty of sparring and feels on top of the world right now, but that could change in a couple of days.

"His opponent has been on the card for 3-4 weeks and he's raring to go and to prove himself again. It's a tricky test but he's got to beat boys like this if he wants to go further in his career."
