THE East of Scotland Cup honours went to Kelty Hearts on Saturday as they finished clinically to beat their rivals Hill of Beath Hawthorn.

Meanwhile Crossgates Primrose were losing to Dundee North End in the same competition while Dundonald Bluebell disappointed in their super League game at Broughty Athletic.

Kelty Hearts 3,

Hill of Beath Hawthorn 0.

AFTER their disappointing Scottish Junior Cup performance at Kelty, Haws were looking for much better in this D J Laing East of Scotland Cup tie but the Hearts held the aces in attack.

After Derek Renton had an early shot blocked for the visitors Hearts took the lead in six minutes when Conrad Courts sent over a lovely low cross and Brian Ritchie blasted home in the middle of the penalty area.

Haws retaliated and a long pass sent Calum Adamson racing into the Kelty box but he fluffed his shot wide then at the other end Conrad Courts fired in a fine shot which had Stuart Hall at full stretch.

Then Hearts had a penalty when Ritchie was pulled down on the edge of the box but Husband’s spot-kick was well parried by Hall and then Russell Grierson cleared.

Before the break Jordyn Sheerin raced into the Haws’ box but Hall produced another fine save.

Hearts opened the second period well and twice went close to adding to their lead but at the other end Haws saw a header flash just wide.

Then in 65 minutes Kelty went 2-0 up. From a free-kick 25 yards out Husband’s low shot curled around the wall and beat Hall.

Then four minutes from time Husband got his second with a fierce right foot shot from a fairly acute angle to put the seal on a good win for the home side.

Haws boss Bobby Wilson was disappointed that his team did not take a couple of good chances in the first-half that could have asked questions of Kelty: “When you are playing a team of Hearts’ quality you have to take your chances and I felt that if Calum Adamson had scored with one of the situations when he got through it could have greatly helped our cause.

“However, it did not happen and I have no complaints about the final score.”

Broughty Athletic 3,

Dundonald Bluebell 1.

A DISAPPOINTING result for Bluebell as they took on a team which had not won in 11 games.

Yet the early stages of the game suggested that Dundonald were going to get a least a point on Tayside as they dominated possession and created some fine chances.

However, Broughty defended well but eventually Bluebell got the breakthrough when Josh Thomson was fouled in the box and the penalty was dispatched by Lewis McKenzie.

Broughty did not panic though but their defence was being ripped apart at times as Bluebell created a number of good openings and on three occasions the home ‘keeper made outstanding saves.

Then two minutes from the break a rash tackle by a Bluebell defender saw a needless penalty conceded and James Lennox managed to finger-tip the ball on to a post but the rebound was converted.

In the second period Broughty gained in confidence from being level at the break and they started to create chances and they grabbed the lead through a good finish in 65 minutes.

Dundonald seem to lose their way as Broughty started to look the better side and with 15 minutes left they got a third.

There was no way back for Bluebell in a game which promised so much early on.

The result puts Broughty on 29 points, three behind Bluebell with four less games played and Moorside boss Stevie Kay was disappointed with what he saw from his team: “We had chances to get away from Broughty but did not take them.

“We had several really good openings but simply did not take them but really we fell away after the break and did not compete strongly enough.

“A couple of the goals we conceded were avoidable and but we will be without Calum Rarity and Craig Wedderburn for some time yet so it was not a good day for us.

“With Kelty Hearts and Hill of Beath at Moorside in the next two weeks we will have to defend better to add to our points total and I may have to re-think how we are going to plug the loss of our two centre backs.”

Dundee North End 3,

Crossgates Primrose 2.

A SECOND-Half collapse saw Crossgates lose this East of Scotland tie with North End in Dundee.

Primrose had gone in at the break ahead and looking good but after the break they just fell away completely.

Yet North End started well and grabbed the lead in just 11 minutes when the Dundee side created a good move and the conversion was good.

But Primrose took a grip of the midfield and squared things in 20 minutes with a good piece of finishing from Stuart Donaldson.

It was all about Crossgates now and just after the half hour mark Liam Forbes fired them ahead and there could have been more before the break.

Things started off alright for Primrose after the break and they defended well and could have grabbed the key third, but on 65 minutes North End drew level.

This gave the Dundee side confidence and with ten minutes left they went 3-2 up.

Primrose tried to get back in to it but the hosts defended solidly to ease in to round three.
