TALENTED sprint stars at Kelty Primary School will bid to remain on track for more athletics success in Glenrothes next month.

A team of P6-P7 pupils will have the chance to progress to the final of the Fife and Tayside Sportshall Athletics in two weeks time after they ran to glory at the first regional event in the competition last month.

Sportshall provides an ideal format in which to introduce youngsters to athletics and multi-skills competition, working as part of a team, encouraging them to compete in a fun, team-based environment, and learn physical literacy and basic movement skills.

Events are organised across local authorities in Scotland, leading to regional finals that take place between February and April, and Kelty's pupils made it through the first stage at Carnegie Leisure Centre.

The event was organised by Dunfermline and West Fife Sports Council as part of a series of events across eight sports that they offer to primary schools throughout the year.

Kelty's P6-7 team edged out Duloch to win the event overall, while the school's P4-5 pupils made it a double by winning their event ahead of Duloch and St Margaret's primaries.

The school's P6-7 pupils won the Sportshall event in Dundee last year and the current crop are just one step away from having the chance to emulate them and head to the top of the class.

Colin Lyle, depute headteacher, said: "Last year we went through two qualifying rounds and won the Tayside and Fife Sportshall competition and, as a school, we're quite new to it. Ricky Skelding has been working with the pupils on their general fitness and key skills needed for Sportshall athletics, and a lot of them have gone on to join Pitreavie Amateur Athletics Club, taking part in run, jump and throw or being part of the squad.

"We have seen an increase in the uptake and attendance at lots of different sports events, and it's nice for the kids to have their achievement recognised."
