COWDENBEATH got their first win in six starts in all competitions over Montrose and now manager Liam Fox wants his team to use it as a springboard to start their recovery up the table.

The win, added to other results, has the Blues in eighth spot, two above bottom side Edinburgh City, and three behind fifth top Berwick so clearly a bit of consistency could soon help the team up the Ladbrokes League 2 table.

However, this Saturday’s opponents, City at Meadowbank Stadium, have gone five cup and league games undefeated so it will be no easy task to get another win under the belt.

The way that Montrose were beaten was an important aspect because it was by far Cowden’s best performance in two months.

And they scored first for the first time since they beat City at Central Park.

The manager was very pleased with what he saw against the Gable Endies: “Getting the first goal made a real difference and you could see the confidence level rise.

“It was good to build on a better performance at Berwick and we opened well went ahead and then started to create a lot of good chances.

“It would have been nice to score another couple of goals but it has given us something to build further on this week in training.

“You could feel in the dressing room after the game the difference in the atmosphere but it is just three points and we have to look to keep building on that platform.”

Striker Kris Renton was hauled down for the first-half penalty and then scored the second and he feels that the team gave themselves a real lift by their performance at Berwick and kept it going against Montrose.

He said: “We really should have done better than just draw at Berwick because we dominated long spells of that game and we kept it going against the Gable Endies.

“Getting the first goal definitely makes a difference and after we went ahead we could have scored a lot more but the important thing is putting together a run of results for that can really make a big difference to your position in this division, due to its tightness.”

The manager agreed and added: “Edinburgh City have had a good run of results in the league and cup so it will need a lot of hard work at Meadowbank Stadium to get a result but we have shown ourselves how we can play and that has to be our target to repeat that this weekend.”

It is unlikely there will be any changes from the Montrose game because there were no injury problems to report.
