The Scots had a great weekend with Chris Burgoyne becoming the European formula II Champion at Northampton while Kirkcaldy stock rod driver Jim Pitcaithly won the ORCi stock rod Irish Masters at Ballymena Raceway.

Amongst the formula II drivers at Northampton were Windygates duo Gordon Moodie (Windygates) and Ian Thompson, as well as Dennis Middler (Carnoustie), Stevie Forster (Carluke), Emma Mellis (Edinburgh) whilst in the formula Is there was Stuart Shevill Jnr (Motherwell) and Paul Ford (St Boswell).

On Saturday night both Burgoyne and Moodie won their heats whilst Thompson was sixth in one of the consolation races. Moodie and Burgoyne were eliminated in separate incidents with Michael Green going through to retain the Steve Green Junior Memorial Trophy with Thompson in eighth. Burgoyne ended up in third place in the Grand National.

Shevill Jnr was sixth in the formula I consolation and joined Ford on the grid for the final but neither were classified although Ford was later to finish in eight place in the Grand National.

On Sunday the glorious weather continued with Burgoyne starting on row 2 for the formula II European and Moodie on row 10, the only two Scottish drivers to qualify. Burgoyne went through for an easy win, to add to his British Championship with Moodie ending up in second and Wim Peeters from Holland in third.

Moodie won heat two with Burgoyne in seventh place and then came home in fourth in the final with Burgoyne not classified.

Dan Johnson won the formula I Euro version where he led home Nigel Green and Lee Fairhurst and whilst Ford finished in tenth, Shevill Jnr wasn’t classified. In the heats Shevill Jnr picked up a fifth place but Ford had to wait until the consolation race where he finished in fourth place. Shevill Jnr finished in second place during the final but Ford rolled, clambering out unhurt.

The second half of the season at the Cowdenbeath Racewall looks to be a pretty hectic affair and there are plenty of trophies and titles to be won both Nationally and at home.

The action starts this Saturday night with the BriSCA formula IIs in action, the ORCi stock rods, who are competing in a one of their Grand Prix rounds, the Colin Scott memorial trophy for the minis the micro banger Supreme Championship plus the youngsters in the microf2s.

The following week brings July to a close with the formula IIs, 2 litre saloons, Lightning rods and prostox in action.

August is certainly going to be a month to look forward to starting off with the formula IIs, saloons, stock rods and prostox whilst the following week is going to be a bit special.

It is 40 years since Gordon McDougall, the man behind BriSCA coming to Scotland, became the first Scottish driver to become a World Champion and he did so in an electrically filled atmosphere. To celebrate the occasion we have a two day meeting with 2 litre saloons, 1300cc saloons lightning rods, minis, microf2s and the Siamese bangers. The minis are racing for their points in the Disco Series rounds whilst the Siamese bangers have their Scottish Championship to decide – a race not to be missed. However on that day is part one of legends day 3 where drivers from the past will be heading to the Racewall and taking part in some speedway style races.

On Sunday the meeting is for the legends and it promises to be quite an occasion. There will be Scotland v England speedway races for saloons and open wheel drivers, classic hot rods racing, complete with passenger seats, classic saloons, street rods and classic fords on show. To date around 100 or so legends have indicated that they will appear including Conrad Self, Danny Sameru, Alan Gladden, Bob Jones, Keith Jarman and Kenny Ireland. The replica cars of Gordon McDougall and Howard Cole will be out on track and it is hoped to get McDougall behind the wheel of his replica whilst the classic hot rod drivers are fitting passenger seats into their cars.
