BOCCIA star Kieran Steer is on his way to Rio after he was selected for Team GB's Paralympic Games squad.

The Crossgates Disability Sport Fife (DSF) member is one of 10 athletes who have been chosen to compete for Great Britain in the sport that is similar to bowls but designed specifically for athletes with a disability.

Steer will be joined on the plane by another five Scots, including the world champion in his BC4 category, Stephen McGuire, and comes after he picked up a European silver medal last year.

Together with McGuire and Evie Edwards, he helped GB finish as runners-up to Slovakia in the BC4 pairs at the European Teams and Pairs Boccia Championships and, while gold medal winning teams gained automatic selection for the Paralympics, Steer's GB coach, Claire Morrison from Dalgety Bay, was confident they had achieved enough ranking points to seal their place.

A gold medal at the recent Czech International Open – once more in the pairs and alongside McGuire – and a quarter-final appearance in the individual B4 event helped Steer cement his place in the squad.

He was also a good medallist in the European Continental Cup BC4 singles last April and he becomes the first high performance boccia player from Fife to achieve selection for the Paralympics.

Matt Hammond, team leader for GB Boccia, said: "The team is as strong as it’s ever been and these athletes have been pushed throughout the qualification period to deliver the performances needed to secure their place on the team. I’d like to congratulate the athletes and their competition partners for all of their hard work up to this point and I believe we can pose a real threat to our rivals on the court in Rio."

The 15th Paralympic Games will take place from September 7-18 and the boccia events will run from September 10-16.
