LOCHGELLY boxing star Emma McCulloch said that her latest bout was the "most disappointed" she has felt so far in her career – despite picking up a silver medal.

The Scottish elite light flyweight champion was in London at the weekend to compete in the prestigious Haringey Box Cup, Europe's largest amateur boxing event that takes place over three consecutive days at the famous Alexandra Palace.

Emma, who is a member at Glenrothes Boxing Club alongside Kelty pro star Connor Law, returned to Haringey 12 months after her first scheduled appearance ended in disappointment when her opponent was over the required weight and had been placed in a different category.

There were no such issues this time for the Central Fifer, who last month won a bronze medal at the Eindhoven Box Cup after narrowly losing out to Dutch number one Alicia Holzken at 51kg, as she was paired with Zoe McElwee of Leicester's Waterfront Boxer Academy.

In a straight final of three two minute rounds on the final day of competition, Emma was beaten on a split decision but told Times Sport: "For some reason I was more nervous than usual. After the fight, I felt that the first round was quite an even round but that I won both the second and the third. Unfortunately though, I didn't get the decision and lost on a split. Even though I have boxed better in the past, I was adamant that I had done more than enough. After the bout, my opponent's coach approached me and said he believed that I had won the fight too. I appreciated his input but it wasn't much consolation as it was probably the most disappointed I've felt so far.

"I know these things happen in boxing and it certainly happened on a few occasions over the weekend. I really enjoy the Haringey Box Cup and I don't want this year's experience to put me off for the future."

She added: "This year there was five rings running on day one of the tournament with around 400 boxers entered. It's so well organised considering how large it is and I was pleased to be able to fight at my own weight of 48kg.

"It's the end of the season now but I'll continue to train over the summer. I'm going to use the time to focus on areas of development so I'm ready to go again next season."
