LAST weekend’s results mean that this Saturday’s round of games will go a long way to deciding the Ladbrokes League One relegation issue.
With Brechin City beating Peterhead 5-1 and Forfar losing 0-2 at home to Airdrieonians the Loons are now bottom on 34 points. City are in second bottom spot on 36 with Cowdenbeath’s opponents at Central Park on Saturday, Stenhousemuir, on 37 after a 0-4 defeat at home to Ayr United.
Cowden are on 39 so a win on Saturday would finish the Blue Brazil’s interest in the matter and manager Colin Nish wants his team to extend their unbeaten run and complete the job.
Cowdenbeath have collected ten points from their last four matches with only one goal conceded in  these games.
The Blues need a repeat of that miserly return against Saturday’s opponents, Stenny, to help them get the result they so desperately want.
Said the manager: “We knew that Albion Rovers would be looking to win the game to maintain their interest in the promotion play-offs saw we had to defend well.
“The team worked hard as a unit on their defensive duties and recorded another shut-out but at the other end we saw plenty of possession and had chances to win in it.
“While a win would have been welcomed it was a good point, but the job is not done yet.”
He added: “We need one more win and if we can beat Stenhousemuir it would give us the result we want.
“Stenny will have the same mindset so we know that it will be another day on which we will have to look to find our best form.
“If we can continue to create chances and defend well we will get the result, but there can be no room for any drop in standards.”
The Blues have a few injury worries with midfielder Liam Callaghan struggling but on the plus side link man Keiran Gibbons is now free from suspension.
It is unlikely that there will be many changes in the line-up for the Stenny game although Gibbons may resume in the central area.
It seems almost certain that Mr Nish will continue with his system of Greig Spence as the loan attacker supported by Lewis Milne.
He would like Callaghan to be available to increase the options but that will be touch and go.
He is concerned about the injury situation though.
He said: “It may be Thursday or Friday before we know who will be fit for the game. A few are nursing knocks but hopefully they will be ready for Saturday.”
