ANOTHER great home result for Cowden at the weekend and it has opened up the chance for the Blue Brazil to launch their top-four bid.

The result moved Cowdenbeath on to 15 points from 13 games with Tuesday’s scheduled game at Albion Rovers their fixture in hand. And with Rovers on 20 points, in fourth spot the table, it is tight.

But Cowden know that they have to keep their four-game unbeaten run going and it does not get any tougher than a game against the Petrofac Cup finalists, Peterhead, at Balmoor on Saturday.

But Cowden showed again on Saturday they can defend well, as they recorded their third successive shut-out against Brechin City.

A point made after the weekend win, Cowdenbeath player/boss Colin Nish said: “It was an excellent result but at times I felt we were a bit flat.

“We got the early lead, which we had talked about was very necessary, but then let them back into the game.

“We needed a couple of fine saves from Jamie Sneddon to keep us in front, and then finished the game very strongly.

“The chances we created in the closing 20 minutes were excellent and in the end, we could have won by a lot more. However, it was the three points we were looking for.”

Full back-turned-midfielder and penalty taker Dean Brett agreed and said the incentive was there to keep putting together these sort of performances. He said that after penalty misses by Greig Spence and Robbie Buchanan, it was his turn to take the spot kicks and he was delighted to convert the 10th-minute award against City.

“It was my turn and I felt good when I took it, although Graeme Smith made a brave effort to save it," he said. "But it was great to see it fly high into the net.

“That is eight points from four games, which is just what we needed and it has moved us into a position from which we could launch a challenge for a top-four spot.

“There are two tough away games coming up and if we can get points from these, we can look to move up the table. It is so tight but fourth place is something we can aim for.”

The manager agrees but he knows that the tidy defending of the past few weeks must continue.

“The defensive work has been excellent recently and we need to keep that going," Nish said. “If we can do that, we can move up the table into a challenging position.”

Brad Donaldson suffered a nose injury against Brechin but should be fit for the trip to Balmoor.
