KELTY boxer Connor Law maintained his winning start as a professional fighter by racking up his fifth victory at Ravenscraig earlier this month.

The 23-year-old produced an assured performance to clinch a 40-37 points victory over Barnsley-based opponent Matthew Malin, who had suffered just two losses in 12 bouts.

The Glenrothes Boxing Club middleweight's effort against a fighter who challenged for the English middleweight crown pleased coach Stevie McGuire ahead of his next fight at Meadowbank next month.

Law is on the undercard for the 'Lift Off' show on 16th October, hosted by former world featherweight champion Barry McGuigan's boxing stable Cyclone Promotions, which will feature the home professional debut of Commonwealth Games gold medalist Josh Taylor.

An opponent for the West Fifer is still to be confirmed but McGuire said, "He boxed really well and it was a good performance against a tough guy. Connor was obviously nervous and a wee bit wary in the first round and I don't blame him; Malin had nine wins, two losses and a draw from 12 fights, and was put forward for the English middleweight title. It was his hardest fight to date and the first round was a draw, but after that he destroyed the boy. I thought the guy was finished in the third round but it went the distance, and that's not a bad thing for his development.

"We're happy with how he did."

McGuire added, "His next fight will be on 16th October at Meadowbank on Barry McGuigan's show. He manages Josh Taylor so Connor will be on the bill with him, and there's a possibility that it could even be screened on ITV. He hasn't had an opponent confirmed yet but there is a French guy in the pipeline, and we're trying to find him harder opponents to help him up the rankings.

"After Meadowbank he's boxing at the Gilvenbank Hotel in Glenrothes on 20th November, which will mean he's had three fights before new year and then we'll be looking to arrange another two or three after that. He's progressing really well but he's still on a learning stage; we can't throw him into a title fight because he's not experienced enough yet. But that will come."
