LET us hope that the fireworks event in Cardenden goes ahead this year.

For 20 years it has been a highlight of the year in the Cardenden area and the people who have made it happen deserve a lot of credit.

They are all community activists who work hard behind the scenes and who get precious little thanks for what they achieve. The incident last year when they saw lighting equipment stolen was a real blow. How that equipment was taken from Wallsgreen Park without anyone seeing it disappear was quite remarkable.

To steal such a unit needs either a big vehicle to toe it or a trailer so it is not something that cannot be sneaked away.

For some time it seemed that the loss of this equipment was going to mean the end for the fireworks display and community bonfire but in the Times it seemed that there were ‘high hopes’ that the 2014 event would go ahead. I hope that these hopes are realised. It has to be remembered that the bonfire and display brings over 4000 people to the village on an annual basis.

That is a tremendous fact and it is a reason why it has to continue. It costs a lot of money to make the event happen and hopefully there will be plenty of backing from the public over the next few months to ensure that we have the community bonfire this November.

I often wonder why people who attend the event do not all make a contribution for what is a brilliant evening’s entertainment. It is worth a lot more than £1 thrown into a bucket.

BONFIRE FAN, Cardenden.
