Action needed at the park

Several months ago some irresponsible member(s) of the public discarded two carrier bags full of bottles under the trees next to the footpath that goes through the woodland area at the south end of Grace Street allotments.

These bags remained there for some time before someone dragged them back out again then smashed the bottles over the footpath at three separate places.

On the 19th February I reported this broken glass to the staff at the Council offices, explaining that this footpath is used regularly by many dog walkers, horse-riders and most importantly, on some occasions by toddlers from either Noah's Ark nursery or the South School. As nothing had been done, I reported it again on 12th March and once more on the 17th March as the broken glass was still there.

On the 22nd March the broken glass was still there, so I went back to the local council office to report it once more. Unfortunately, I was disconcerted to find that the staff were more concerned about my dog coming into the office although he does nothing wrong when he is in there and I never take him in when the office is busy, their excuse being that the office is not big enough.

I was once told by a Community Warden that nothing could be done if nothing is reported, but how often does it have to be reported before anything is done?

However, in the afternoon I went to the Regeneration Office and took two wardens down to the area where the broken glass was and they were shocked to find the enormity of the problem and the fact that it extended to the Industrial Site at The Avenue.

The Community Wardens were very responsive to my complaint but could not promise that the Council would act on their report, the problem of budgets being mentioned.

I am sick to death of Fife Council's lackadaisical attitude to the health and safety of the public in Lochgelly and this is a feeling that comes across from many of the people I speak to on a daily basis.

Instead of trying to resolve the problem, Fife Council seem to actively encourage it as long as it is kept away from the main streets of the town.

I am trying to encourage people to complain at the local council office (making sure they ask for a receipt) or through the pages of the local paper, as something needs to be done to shake Fife Council out of their lethargy.

J McKINLAY, Lochgelly.
