While I welcome the news that the Chief Executives of Scotland's 32 local councils have agreed to forego any salary increases for 2010/2011, I would have been better pleased if the proposed freeze extended much further down local authority management pay scales.
After all, there are only 32 Local Authority Chief Executives in Scotland, so any savings, while welcome, will be relatively small. At the same time, there must be hundreds of local government officials and employees earning anything from £50,000 to £100,000 plus per annum. To my mind therefore, there is scope for substantial savings if the proposed wage freeze for Chief Executives extended much further down local government salary scales.
The obvious question which arises from this suggestion is "where do you draw the line?".
There is no doubt that would be a difficult decision to make. Even so, it is perhaps worth pointing out that all of Scotland's elected councillors who receive a basic salary of just over £16,000 a year have agreed to a pay freeze for 2010/2011.

the problem is the level of debt dwarfs any savings that can come from this.
Do people really know bad it is? There's a trillion pounds of cuts at the other end of the general election. And the number is increasing month by month .
The cynical, and honest view, is that the Prime Minister deliberately left any repayment strategy till after the general election so that the new government gets the blame.
