Karen was a worthy winner

I was extremely disappointed and yet not surprised when I read the letter from "NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED" in relation to Karen Hunter's Citizen of the Year award.

I am disappointed that this person starts off by congratulating Karen on getting the award and saying that he holds no prejudice against her and then goes on to say that it is what she is paid to do so this in his opinion makes a mockery of the award. Very hypocritical in my opinion!

It doesn't surprise me that this person has gathered a few facts and has come to his conclusion on the basis of what little he knows.

Did you bother to find out how many people were nominated or, how many votes there were? Well, from what I can gather there were few nominations for the awards in the first place, and it just so happens that from those few, Karen had been nominated the most so, therefore that makes her the winner. It must also be said that, as far as I know, there are no criteria that say that a paid worker cannot be nominated for the award. So, what is the problem?

I can almost guarantee that the person who took the time to write this letter probably didn't take the time to nominate someone for the Citizen of the Year Award!?! Did you now? Or, is it a bit of sour grapes because you weren't nominated yourself?

I know Karen well and work very closely with her in my capacity as a community activist and I have to say that she is one of the most approachable, genuine, and hardworking Community Education Workers I have ever had the pleasure of coming into contact with (this I am qualified to say as I too graduated with a degree in Community Education).

Karen is incredibly dedicated to her work and is very much focussed on working with the many local groups, organisations and community activists to make the community of Benarty a better place to live, work and play for all concerned.

She is a decent, straight forward, trustworthy individual with the best interests of the community at heart. The other thing about Karen is that she is always willing to go above and beyond the call of duty, yes her job entails working "unsociable" hours but I bet there aren't many Community Education Workers across Fife who work as many "unsociable" hours as she does and every hour she is out of the house in the evening or weekend is another hour that she isn't spending with her two young children and her partner. I have never, ever heard her complain about the long hours she works or make excuses so as not to have to go to another evening/weekend meeting.

I say good luck to her, she is a worthy winner, and I'm certainly proud to know her and work alongside her. I just wish that people around here would be a bit more positive and actually be glad to see others getting on and making a success of their lives.

It never fails to amaze me how much energy people are willing to put into negative activities such as moaning and complaining - maybe if our letter writer changed his attitude around and started thinking and acting more positively then his contribution might just help to make a difference in the community. Now there is a challenge for you Mr Letter Writer!
