IT was interesting to read in the Times about the amount of work done by local Environment Groups, in a Cowdenbeath Area Committee article.

It really was shocking the amount of rubbish that Cowdenbeath Environment Group collected from the Community Woodland area. Some 50 bags is a vast amount and makes you wonder what people think about when they are using such an asset to the town.

Too many simply throw away wrappers and tin cans carelessly and really if they just thought what they were doing they would keep a hold of them and dispose of them at home.

But I would imagine all the Environment Groups will be facing the same situation as they take their first steps to carry out local spring cleans. Carelessly discarding rubbish is not singular to Cowdenbeath.

It was good to read how each community now has its own group and the success of them in the Beautiful Fife awards shows how hard working they are.

The unfortunate thing is that every one of them struggles to get volunteers to join them for it is something which really makes a difference to communities.

The Lochgelly Group, which was set up a couple of years ago, have made a real difference to the town during the spring and summer with the planters in Bank Street and Main Street.

When you walk down the street in the better weather it is really nice to see the way the floral arrangements catch the eye.

Remarkably the local groups always persuade the Beautiful Fife judges to give them decent markings and that is great to see.

It would be good if the groups could get more people to help them though for just two or three more folk getting involved in each community could make a huge difference so the resources of them but those involved do a great job and I take my hat off to them.

ENVIRO FAN,

Lochgelly.
