AT Cowdenbeath's game against Clyde last Saturday manager Gary Bollan endured a stream of vitriolic abuse from the visiting fans over the 90 minutes duration (water off a duck's back,I'm sure,), but it was at the final whistle that things really boiled over.

The manager, obviously delighted by his team's victory and vital three points, celebrated wildly with his staff and players.

This prompted a furious reaction from the Bully Wee supporters who charged from their seating area, the only thing stopping them from reaching the park being the high security fences. They were spouting bile at anybody within their vicinity (I myself being singled out by one of them as a fat b******, and I was only there as a reporter for a radio station!)

Many people working at games as stewards are quite young, and are only doing so for a little extra money (fair enough), but they probably have no training in how to deal with possible antagonistic behaviour and therefore don't go into crowds to weed out any potential trouble makers.

As long as teams in the lower leagues continue to use stewards as security at matches, instead of the police, there is always going to be a propensity for trouble.
