IT was exactly right what councillor Mary Lockhart said about the villages of Central Fife in last week's Times.

So much has been done for Lochgelly and Cowdenbeath by various authorities and organisations but there is a danger the villages, which are getting bigger and bigger, could be forgotten.

Look at Kelty for instance. Its population has grown over the past 20 years as various developers have built homes and of course there is an application in for another 900 new homes.

That is set to take Kelty's population up to over 7,000 people which is creeping up on Lochgelly.

So while it is right for the two big towns to get extra treatment the smaller villages should also be in the queue for backing.

It will be argued that Benarty got a new community centre five years ago and Kelty something similar two years ago but it has to be about looking ahead now.

In Benarty it is an exciting time as Lochore Meadows Country Park's profile is ever increasing with the new visitor centre opening and the golf clubhouse coming on stream.

But there are some pretty vacant areas such as in Inchgall Avenue, Crosshill, and these need tackling.

Also in Cardenden the former Youth Centre in Main Street, now derelict, is really a blight on the landscape and needs to be dealt with.

But there are other problems in the ABCD villages which need attention and cannot afford to be forgotten.

So without doubt the situations mentioned by Councillor Lockhart are very real and have to be kept in front of the power brokers. Otherwise they may well be forgotten.

There is no doubt that Kelty's lack of primary school accommodation and a decent sized health centre are two major issues when you think about the population being increased by over 1000 people.

Yet another situation that has to be tackled. I look forward to seeing how Ms Lockhart gets on with her quest.

VILLAGER,

Ballingry.
