FIFE Council should be congratulated on tightening up on those businesses that dodge paying for disposal of their waste.

Currently businesses with waste items to dispose of can do so at one of nine recycling centres in the county including those in Cowdenbeath and Lochgelly, but by purchasing a special ticket to allow them to do so.

However, it would appear that some are dumping material not covered by the ticket which includes stuff that apparently will end up in a landfill site but worse there are commercial operators dumping materials without having purchased a ticket at all.

I noticed in the Times that it was stated that too few commercial people are buying tickets so many are simply dumping illegally which is just not at all right. Indeed, the chairman of the environment committee stated in the Times that these commercial dumpers were basically being subsidised by the Fife council tax payers. That really is a disgrace.

Hopefully not too many of these illegal people will be business people from the Cowdenbeath-Lochgelly area but it surely is right that the council get a grip of the situation.

That very same councillor reckoned that a loss of almost £2m is being sustained by the council and he was quick to point out that this certainly cannot continue.

So while some commercial people might not be happy with the measures being taken, including number plate recognition at the recycling centres, but what can they expect after failing to stick with the current system.

Now I have noticed that some people have suggested that these moves could lead to an increase in fly-tipping at the side of roads.

Now maybe so but surely these people who have been riding on the back of residents of the county need to wise up and pay the going rate to dump their waste.

WASTER,

Cowdenbeath.
