OH dear how sad, never mind. The Scots are now out of it again, the World Cup finals I mean.

At least we share our fate with the once glorious Dutch. I am reminded of that scene in the film, 'The Great Escape', where a miniscule Scotsman, played by the late Angus Lennie, who has gone stir-crazy, attempts to vault the fence in the Stalag, only to be shot in the back by a 'Nasty Nazi'.

Come to think of it, wasn't that a bit of an over reaction to Mr Lennie's over-acting on the part of 'Nasty Nazi', merely reprimand him for attempting to escape and pass him over to Herr Flick or Herr Todt, played by the late Ronald Lacey, for interrogation about his travel plans?

What's for matins?, I can hear the self satisfied chorus of the English footballing squad, now humming the theme from the 'Great Escape', but due to cost shortages, no tubas are supplied. Good luck with the tunnel gentlemen.

JAMES MARTIN,

Cowdenbeath.
