YOUR report about local councillor Alex Campbell calling for representatives from Exxon/Mobil to attend a 'public meeting' of Cowdenbeath Area Committee to answer councillors' questions did not make clear that all Cowdenbeath Area Committee meetings are in fact public.

You report that Cllr Campbell said that he 'spoke at' the public meeting organised by the Mossmorran Action Group. This is rather odd as the only public statement Cllr Campbell made at the meeting was a complaint that he had been left out when the Mossmorran operators supplied councillors with gifts!

Cllr Campbell also wants representatives from SEPA and NHS Fife to attend the Area Committee to 'explain what they are doing' but he does not mention the Air Quality Monitoring team at Fife Council, whose job it is to keep an eye on air quality around the plant.

Surely their own officers are the first people councillors should be questioning so that they can consider whether Fife Council is doing all it can to monitor and control pollution from Mossmorran.

Rather than leaving individual councillors who may or may not have received largesse from Exxon/Mobil and Shell to their own devices, concerned residents can put their questions to the Area Committee to consider when it next meets.

There is a little known procedure which allows the public to ask questions at all Area Committee meetings so long as they are submitted in writing to the Convener or Committee Clerk at least 10 days before the meeting.

Dates for meetings as well as relevant email addresses may be found by searching for Cowdenbeath Area Committee at fifedirect.org.uk.
