THE point made by our new Cowdenbeath and Kelty councillor in last week's front page story was a very pertinent one.

I can remember that happening in Kelty a couple of years ago when the soft base was ripped up and it now seems to be happening in Cowdenbeath.

I am bound to say that what on earth youngsters are ripping up the base off playparks for is beyond me.

Other than wanton vandalism it just seems to be be a pointless exercise.

But the point that Darren Watt makes about it stopping spending elsewhere in the council chain, is very much a factor.

Money is hard enough for Fife Council to find far less cash having to be spent on needless repairs for vandalism.

The thing is that the old tar base that used to be used for playparks was very durable but did not give much away if a kid hit it falling off a swing.

These new soft areas are very safe but if someone wants to damage it they can do so quite easily with any real problem.

We can only hope that these people that carry out causing the damage realise that it is a needless waste of money and stop attacking the playparks.

Currently we have a group of parents planning to create new playparks in Cardenden, presumably with the soft bases.

Certainly they will not want to see new playparks created with top class bases only to see them ripped up.

Hopefully this practice will come to an end sooner rather than later for Fife Council simply cannot afford to see this continue to happen.

ANTI-VANDAL,

Cowdenbeath.
