I WAS delighted to see in the Times about the efforts that are to be made to commemorate the service the Broad Street Centre has given to the town of Cowdenbeath.

The Legacy Group has done marvellously well to realise £24,000 to carry out a series of events to mark the closure of Broad Street.

I noticed that it was mentioned that Broad Street Centre, created out of a unit of the old mining school, was one of Fife's first ever community centres.

It turned out to be a great move and for over decades has given the town community facilities it really needed.

The staff too have been stalwarts, like Kenny Aitken and Evelyn Irvine, and it was interesting to read that they have left up to 3000 photographs of happenings at Broad Street.

The committee, led by the irrepressible Danny Kinloch, have fought the Broad Street corner brilliantly and they have ensured that the Centre has continued to flourish.

It will be a shame, to a certain extent, when the doors close for the final time, but remember it will be a new era with the opening of the Maxwell Centre.

This will indeed be a good moment in the town's history and what a change it will bring.

Broad Street Centre was something that was created out of an old used building without any fancy advantages while the Maxwell Centre, while evolving out of the old social work offices, will have purposes built facilities.

That will also include the new community hall so it is something to be really excited about.

But while there is that to look forward to there is also the look back at 40 years of the Broad Street Centre and it will be tremendous.

I hope that the people of the town rally around the commemorative events and have a great time looking at the various great events held at Broad Street.

OLD TIMER,

Cowdenbeath.
