A FEW years ago I wrote to the Times on the subject of the speed of traffic on Foulford Road, here in Cowdenbeath.

As the school crossing patrol officer I stand opposite the park gates on Foulford Road as I assist not only the children heading towards Foulford Primary School, but also children going to Broad Street (Cowdenbeath Primary) and any other people who wish me to cross them over this part of the road.

The speed limit on this stretch of road is 20mph, as indicated by the disc on the lamp posts and on other traffic signs along this road.

Over the years I have carried out this job I see the volume of traffic increasing but the speed of the various vehicles using this road is frightening as they pass me and the children well over the limit on this road.

Even with the speed cushions on this road it tends to make no difference to certain motorists (like them or loathe them the cushions are there for a purpose).

So I have witnessed some motorists using mobile phones, texting, combing their hair, even eating a roll or drinking tea or coffee.

May I say, at this point, I thank those motorists who do observe the 20mph signs, also the ones who stop to allow me to put the children across the road safely, and I thank them for doing this.

Remember it could be your child, children, a relation or a neighbour's child that I am crossing over, give it good thoughts and help me in safely putting these children over the road when they are heading for school or going home as it would be greatly appreciated both from myself and the people using the crossing.
