I WAS a bit puzzled by your recent article about a ‘basic income’.

It seemed that the strategy is all about individuals getting an income from a Government source.

Now that may seen really attractive but I cannot quite work out how this will work.

If the whole of Fife was to be involved in a pilot project you would be talking about something like 200,000 adults getting a basic monthly income.

The article that was in the times had some nice words from the American chap about the welfare state but I did not really detect anything in what he said about how the scheme would work.

Presumably the income would indeed be very basic but even at that to provide one every adult in the whole of Fife would be a lot of money.

Now don’t get me wrong I hope that the proposal would work but the mechanics of it is something I would like to see it detailed.

It has, I have been told, been mentioned on several big stages but I wonder if Alex Rowley could detail for us exactly how this would operate.

There seemed to be plenty of interest at the Kelty meeting so maybe it could be something worth looking at.
