Baby box boom

'From this summer, all newborns in Central Fife and across Scotland will receive a free baby box. This is great news for all new parents. It will include nappies, clothes, toys and books. It also works as a cot for the baby to sleep in. The baby box is currently being trialled in Clackmannan and Orkney although they've been issued extensively in Finland for years. The Scottish Government must be commended for helping ensure all our children get the best start in life and that parents are well supported through the early years of their child's development.

Rail link update

The work continues in pushing for a Dunfermline to Glasgow rail link. The good news is that the Scottish Government is contributing £30k to a study to find out if it would be a worthwhile investment. A regular passenger service would head use the existing Longannet freight line. This may be a long process, but these are the vital first steps. It's something we all want to see and which would be great for commuters, tourists and local businesses.

Education awards

A fun part of my job is visiting our local schools. The creativity and hard work of teaching staff across primary and high schools never fail to impress me. And we all know someone who is outstanding in their work, inspiring pupils through creative lessons and old-fashioned hard work. So why not nominate them for the Scottish Education Awards 2017? If you know someone who has made an outstanding contribution in Central Fife, put their name forward. Visit scottisheducationawards.co.uk to nominate.

Waspi women

In 1995 the pension age was raised to 65 for women to match men. However, many women were not contacted about the change until 2009 and in 2011. This has led to women across the UK joining together to for Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI). Here in West Fife, there is a strong WASPI group. They are meeting on Friday January 20 at 1pm in Grill 48 restaurant at East Port in Dunfermline. The discussion will include arrangements for those wishing to attend a future WASPI protest in London in March, as well as the way forward in West and Central Fife.
