THE debate over the future of Cowdenbeath Town House is an interesting one.

Fife Council have decided to move their offices to Brunton House at other end of the High Street which leaves the historic building basically surplus to requirements.

For people who know a bit about Cowdenbeath's history that is indeed sad news.

For the Town House was the home of the Town Council from the early 1900s and housed that august body until 1974.

And in the Dunfermline District Council days it was where all the housing issues were dealt with and when Cowdenbeath Area Committee was established 10 years ago it was the seat of civic political power once more.

The council chamber was where the then only Communist run local authority in the UK took a decision to confront a Government decision on rent structures.

So as part of the town's history it is at the core and Maureen Kennedy, one of our letter writers, is right to point that out.

However, the current members of the Area Committee are completely behind retention of the Town House and Area Manager Kevin Sayer has also stated that the facility is part of Cowdenbeath history and it would be good to find a new role for the building.

Ms Kennedy's idea of a museum has some supporters and it is something that could fill part of the gap for the future.

There is plenty of space in the building, which was given an upgrade only a few years ago, so with a bit hard work a positive future for this part of Cowdenbeath's history can be retained. Let us hope that the authorities are up for the task.
