COUNCILLORS are concerned about the condition of a building in Cardenden that was this week described as a 'total eyesore', by a member of the public.

Local activist, Jimmy Robertson, has been campaigning for the former newspaper shop at 1 Station Road, to be removed from the landscape for some time.

He told out reporter, "This is has been problem for 30 years and it has continued to decay and is really a public hazard.

"Mr McGuire, who lives only yards from the building at number three, has been bothered with rats burrowing under the property and has to keep his back door shut in good weather in case the rodents go into his home.

"At a time when a considerable sum of money has been spent on the nearby railway station to make it look much better to have this eyesorre just a few yards away is ridiculous.

"It is high time that something was done to get rid of this blot on the landscape".

Councillors Ian Chisholm and Mark Hood agree that something should be done to remove the building.

Councillor Chisholm said, "Many times I have tried to get it demolished but officers have told me they cannot trace the owners.

"There is a little used legislation called 'The Power of Wellbeing' which can be used to demolish or repair buildings at council cost.

"It would be possible for small buildings but we couldn't afford to do some of the huge derelict premises in Fife. Something needs to be done here for I believe it is a safety hazard for youngsters.".

Councillor Hood said that he was looking into the issue and felt that it was something which was unacceptable in a residential area.

Mr Robertson added, "I honestly feel that this building poses a major public danger, for children especially.

"The owners, I believe, live outwith the area ds not seem to want to anything with it other than make it as sound as possible.

"But by the nature of this, the dereliction causes its own problems and the building is an attraction for youngsters. It is high time it was razed to the ground."
