New snowfall means further closure of schools

HUGE efforts by Fife Council staff across services to have all Fife schools opened this morning (Monday) have been hampered by fresh snowfall which is making driving conditions treacherous as the severe weather continued across the Kingdom.
Hundreds of staff have worked round the clock over the weekend to clear roads and school grounds with all but a few schools ready to re-open yesterday and confirmed with parents.
A forecast of one to three centimetres of snow was felt to be manageable and schools were geared to cope with another light snowfall.
Conditions this morning across the Kingdom have now changed drastically with blizzard conditions in some places. Some headteachers are now reluctantly having to make the decision to re-close schools previously declared open this morning.
Bryan Kirkaldy, Head of Education, said: "In the last couple of hours the weather has turned ferocious with blizzard conditions in places and new snow falling on icy roads making all travel very dangerous.
"While it is no-one's wish to close schools at such short notice the change in conditions this morning is making travel difficult throughout the kingdom and in the interests of safety, schools which were previously open this morning are now starting to close.
"I'd urge all parents to keep up to date on Fifedirect, Twitter, Facebook and listen in to local radio for regular updates on schools which may now be closing.
"We will do our best to get the information to parents as fast as possible and we will keep updating regularly as the day progresses."

Report commentThey expected us to send the children back to school. In Kelty the children would have had to stand on the very busy Great North Road as there was no way they could stand on the payment. Given that most people speed down that road I did not send my child.
