ALL schools in Fife will remain closed today (Thursday) as the severe weather continues.

It had been hoped that some schools would be able to open this morning and yesterday headteachers were given the option of opening their school if they felt the local conditions were suitable.

Further snowfall throughout the night, continuing widespread frost and ice and forecasts of more snow and freezing temperatures have meant that all schools in Fife are still closed.

Gritters with snow ploughs have continued to work throughout the night to keep the main routes open but fresh snow falls have meant they are unable to start work on clearing the minor routes and residential areas.

Bryan Kirkaldy, Head of Education, said: "We are all concerned that children are missing out on school and we understand the problems this creates for working parents as they try to find alternative childcare but we must consider first the safety of our children.

"Headteachers have had to make the difficult decision today not to re-open their schools. In coming to that decision they will have looked at the safety of children walking or bussing to school and the forecast for later today to ensure that once at school the children would be able to get home at the end of the day. They must also ensure that they have adequate staff to pupil ratios and with so many people unable to get to work many schools are simply unable to open.

"Decisions on school closures must be made on a day to day basis, depending on the weather and we are updating parents as soon as we can on any decisions made."
