HISTORY was made in Cardenden on Friday when the first ever Christmas lights switch-on was held in the village.

Last year villagers were delighted to see the giant Christmas tree come to the village but now there are also lights to back it up and give Cardenden a real festive atmosphere.

It was also a big day for Cardenden Primary School youngster Nieve Logie, whose design of a snowman won a competition held involving children at the village's three schools and saw her perform the official switch-on. Her design is now captured on a light near the tree.

The community venture involved Ore Valley Housing Association along with Cardenden Environment Group and Fife Council and saw £2000 raised to make the lights possible.

But now the aim is to extend the festive lights throughout the village in the years to come.

Said organiser Vicky Murdoch, "It really was an historic day in Cardenden and it was great to see the village turn out to support it.

"We have had tremendous support from the business community and a great many sources and our aim is to add three lights a year to the provision in the village."

One of the contributors was author Ian Rankin who donated £250. The Inspector Rebus creator is very proud of his Cardenden upbringing.

Added Vicky, "We held a tombola and other fundraisers on Friday afternoon and realised £480 to go towards next year's lights.

"We have had excellent backing from the business community in the village but there may be someone out there who would like to make a donation next year and I would be delighted to hear from them." Vicky can be contacted on 01592 721917.

She added, "I would like to personally thank everyone who has made the Cardenden Christmas lights possible and all who made Friday such a special day."
