YOUNGSTERS who trashed a kids' play park in Kelty have been traced by police.

Last week the vandals had broken the playhouse, set fire to picnic tables, moved paving slabs and pulled out and scattered trees and shrubs at the play park, which is located behind Kelty Community Centre.

Fife Constabulary confirmed on Monday that they had traced a group of local youths responsible for various acts of vandalism at Kelty Community Centre, as well as Kelty Primary School, in the past few weeks.

The total damage was valued at around £1700.

Lochs Community Ward Sergeant Stuart Clark said, "Local community officers have spent a considerable amount of time since these incidents were reported, gathering evidence and speaking to several identified witnesses.

"This has led to the identification of several local youths who have been traced and will now be the subject of a report to the Reporter to the Children's Panel.

"These wilful and reckless acts have had a major impact upon local community amenities and several members of the community have expressed outrage at the damaged caused which has been mindless and totally unwarranted.

"I would take this opportunity to make it clear to those involved in this type of activity, that both the community and police service will work together tirelessly to trace those responsible in an effort to make our communities safer and in doing so better places in which to live and work."

Cowdenbeath area Chief Inspector Ross Bennet called the quick detection "an excellent piece of work".

Two other local children have also been reported to the Children's Panel over an incident at Clentry Nursery in Kelty.

The police confirmed that the eight-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl were the subject of a report following an incident where slates were removed from the roof and thrown through the glass panels of a greenhouse.
