AHEAD of Beath High School's centenary celebrations, this month past pupils will return to the town - some from as far away as Australia - to hold a joint 50th birthday party.

The reunion is being organised by those who were in 6th year together and left school in 1978.

Proceeds from the reunion will go towards establishing the annual Sonia Gmitrzak Memorial Maths Prizes for special achievement starting next year.

Sonia was head girl at Beath High in 1978 and went on to become a successful principal teacher of Maths at Lochgelly High and latterly assistant head at Stirling High. She died of cancer in 2003.

"As a teacher, Sonia always paid particular attention to pupils who struggled, choosing to take the more difficult classes herself and running a Maths club in the lunch break," said reunion organiser Jane Hunter.

Money has already been donated by the class of '78 for the planting of three silver birch trees as well as maths prizes this year for three different age groups.

A representative of the organisers was invited to the awards ceremony at the school in June. The school will celebrate its centenary on 30th August this year.

"Beath's rector Douglas Young and depute head Lesley Porter have been very supportive and appreciative of our contributions," added Jane.

The reunion will take place on Saturday 21st August at Wee Jimmies in Cowdenbeath.

All contemporaries from Beath Junior and Senior High (who are celebrating their 50th birthday this year) are invited. Some teachers will also attend. For tickets, please email janehunter@talktalk.net or hendersonjoyce@mac.com
