A SUBPOSTMASTER at Ballingry Post Office has been sacked following an £18,000 "cash discrepency".

Asim Rahman lost his job following an investigation that revealed evidence of false cash declarations

His subpostmaster contract was terminated on 14th June after the declarations were discovered.

A cash check was undertaken at the branch on 13th May which highlighted a cash shortage of £18131.75.

The discrepency was not sorted until it was brought to Mr Rahman's attention.

The "high value" notes accepted did not match the cash listed in a cash declaration made on 13th May.

Mr Rahman later admitted that for additional security he removed Post Office funds from the branch secure area and allegedly lodged the funds into a combi unit on the retail side.

The investigation stated, "You are advised that by doing so you could have put Post Office assets at serious risk."

One customer told the Times that the Post Office was closed for a week while the investigation was ongoing and blasted the company for not letting customers know what was going on.

She said, "This is a significant amount of money and we feel the Post Office kept it all a secret.

"People want to know what's going on. The Post Office is part of the community so the community get know about these things.
