Police were called to Lochgelly South Primary School on Tuesday 8th June after it was discovered thieves had stolen valuable lead lining from the school roof.
Staff returned from their holiday weekend to find a leaky roof in the main school hall. As is procedure, they contacted Fife Council to repair what was thought to have been a blocked overflow pipe.
However, when workers investigated the source of the leak, they were horrified to discover that thieves had mounted the roof and removed a substantial quantity of lead used to seal the windows. In what seems to have been an organised theft, the culprits had removed and stacked the tiles which were covering the lead, then forcibly removed it. They also attempted to remove lead from other sections of the windows but were unsuccessful.
Police are now dealing with the matter, but the event came as a shock to headteacher, Janice Davidson and all school staff. Janice said, "The pupils of Lochgelly South have worked very hard this year, achieving their Eco Flag status. This involved making significant changes to the playground and such disrespect of school property has saddened everyone within the school."
Local Community Sergeant Des FitzGerald said, "I would ask that if you saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area of the school, or saw any suspicious looking vehicles, please contact the police on 0845 600 5702 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
