THE sun really smiled on the fundraising events for the Help for Heroes Fund on Sunday.
When Lochgelly lads Colin Somerville and Craig Arnott chose Sunday 11th April last autumn for their venture they had no idea that the weather would turn out the way it did.
Said Colin, "I was like a lovely summer's day but perhaps maybe a little too hot for running purposes."
While the duo tackled their Fife Circle run a 5km fun run was taking between Lochgelly High School and Central Park, Cowdenbeath, when 161 runners took part.
While the run runners were through their paces long before midmorning Craig and Colin had to battle against increasing temperatures to cover the 13 rail stations of the Kingdom.
Said Colin, "It really was a quite magnificent day. We could not have asked for any better from the weather and the turn out of competitors for the fun run and supporters was quite magnificent.
"Everyone has been tremendously supportive and we think that the final total raised will be in the region of £10,000.
"We thank everyone who has contributed to the success of the event in any way."
Colin and Craig found the going very tough as the temperature rose and the stations trundled by.
Added Colin, "By the time we got to Inverkeithing it was getting really warm but we managed to keep going and we clocked up a total of 40.58 miles in completing the circle back in Lochgelly." They were met by 50 cheering supporters at the station and almost 150 people when they got to Torleys where the end of event concert was being held.
The fun run proved to be a huge success and among the runners was Cowdenbeath boss Danny Lennon who told the Times, "It was a really great event and I thoroughly enjoyed taking part." Many of the runners were in fancy dress.
The race was sponsored by David Sands retailers and Lochgelly businessman David Farrell made a contribution of £200.
Colin and Craig added that such was the success of the fun run for the Help for Heroes Fund they have committed to making it an annual event.
