A MASSIVE eyesore in the Benarty area has gone at last after a campaign which has lasted over 12 months.
The Meedies Neuk nitespot was demolished by developer Ian Sneddon and now local councillors Willie Clarke and Alex Rowley are hoping that the site will take on a more attractive look in the not too distant future along with improvements throughout the district.
The building, which had previously, over many years, been a focal point for top class entertainment as Crosshill Ex-Servicemen's Club and then several other names, was finally taken down on Friday 12th March.
Over recent years the building deteriorated into a poor state and was an unfortunate blight on the Benarty landscape close to Lochore Meadows Country Park, one of Fife's top visitor attractions.
The councillors, along with the community, had been active in trying to resolve the problem. A petition and several letters to the Times had pressed for a solution while both the Benarty Forum and the Benarty Community Council had worked together for action to be taken.
The way ahead as far as councillors Clarke and Rowley are concerned is for the site to be developed as soon as possible.
They have called for a plan to cover the whole of the Benarty area to upgrade spaces and buildings in the district.
Said Councillor Clarke, chair of the Cowdenbeath Area Committee, "There are still vast improvements to be made to the environment locally and not only Fife Council but private owners require their properties to be upgraded if the outward appearance of the Benarty area is to be significantly improved and a major impact made on the area.
"With positive developments being projected at Lochore Meadows, and at Crosshill's King George V Park and the new purpose built community centre agreed for Flockhouse Avenue with the relocation of the locality office and library within the new building, there is much to be positive about."
Councillor Rowley added, "We cannot stress enough the importance of the community working together to make the area a better place to live in.
"Discussions are ongoing to examine the prospects of development and upgrades and a detailed document is being requested by us so an individual and collective approach can be discussed with a programme designed to upgrade the Benarty area."

give them time? if they'd have taken all the rubble away when they were there in the first place then i wouldnt be moaning about it. and all they had to do was strengthen the fencing so it didnt blow down or is easily pushed over.
lets see you live near here and not have this opinion.
i'm not saying they should build on it now, just leave it in a state where no further damage can be caused to other peoples property who live nearby
