Four generations aboard as business flourishes

TO say that Top Knot Hairdressers in Lochgelly is a family business is no understatement.

The North Street business celebrates 30 years in existence next year and in January the fourth generation of the McMillan family began working in the Post Office Exchange building which was converted into a hairdressers in 1981.

Behind Top Knot is Isobel McMillan, who was there at the start along with her mother Mary.

Isobel is a well known hairdresser in the Central Fife area and her mum was there to support her and help out by cleaning the shop.

She still is involved 29 years on and is still active and in addition to her duties washes shop towels.

Isobel's daughter Ashley Law began her apprenticeship in 1987 and soon also became a popular hairdresser and then at the beginning of the year her daughter Emma began her apprenticeship looking to follow in the footsteps of her mum and grandmother.

Said Isobel, "Looking back it is amazing how the years have rolled in and I can say that if you had asked me back in 1981 if four generations of the family would work in the business I would not have believed it.

"It is nice to see Emma following in the family tradition and I am sure she will be a success in the trade."
