PLANS for a new supermarket at the north end of Cowdenbeath were revealed this week.

Developer, Vico Properties plc, is proposing to build a supermarket at North End Park, which Vico say will regenerate the local area and create over 200 local job opportunities.

A vital element in the proposals will be the relocation of football pitches to Lumphinnans and the creation of a dedicated "football hub" with new changing and club facilities, additional training and development pitches and facilities for the wider community.

Vico Properties has identified North End Park as a suitable location for a supermarket to service Cowdenbeath and the surrounding areas, and the local community are now being consulted on plans to develop a 30,000 sq ft (sales area) supermarket and parking.

Alistair Reid-Thomas, Development Director for Vico Properties plc, commented, "Cowdenbeath suffers from a lack of modern foodstore floorspace, and the development of a supermarket at North End Park will ensure that this need is met.

"Our proposals are an excellent opportunity for the local community and will help regenerate Cowdenbeath by bringing new jobs to the area, reducing the number of people travelling further afield to Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy for food shopping, and attracting more people to the town centre.

"The investment in sporting facilities at Lumphinnans is something that would be included as part of the proposed development. It is anticipated that this would include a football "hub" with changing rooms, club room and community facilities as well as new full-size and development football pitches.

"We have started a comprehensive consultation process with the local community, and have already met with a number of stakeholder groups, as well as continuing to work closely with existing landowners and users Kingdom Brass and begin working with Cowdenbeath AFC and other local clubs. We look forward to continuing our community engagement in the weeks and months ahead".

Commenting on the proposals on behalf of Kingdom Brass, John Todd said, "Kingdom Brass has an agreement in place with Vico concerning our former band hall. The investment that would result for Kingdom Brass would be significant and would ensure a sustainable future for Kingdom Brass, and the Kingdom Brass Youth Band, enabling the organisation to continue to grow and succeed at all levels."

Members of the public will have the opportunity to have their say on proposals at a public consultation which will be announced in the near future. Vico Properties plc is a highly successful and long established property development group.
