KINGLASSIE couple Beryl and Andrew Hughes are determined to organise a major fundraising event despite being hit with the news that Andrew has terminal cancer.

The duo, from Laurence Park, have both fought cancer and that is why they are putting on a special Country and Western event at Kinglassie Institute this Friday.

Explained Beryl, "We have both had to fight cancer and we know the excellent work done by the oncology department at Dunfermline's Queen Margaret Hospital at first hand so this is why we want this Friday's fundraiser to be a big success.

"I suffereed from breast cancer a few years back and received great support from the people at Queen Margaret and then a couple of months back Andrew felt pain in his hip.

"He went to the hospital thinking he had done something to his hip but after exhaustive tests it turned out to be cancer of the left kidney.

"The tests at the oncology unit discovered that the cancer had gone too far to be tackled and Andrew only has a relatively short time to live.

"But that has not affected his enthusiasm for Friday's event and it would be great if we could raise £1000 for the oncology unit."

Andrew (65), is a former prawn fisherman and has seldom been ill throughout his life, so the recent news has come as a shock for the Hughes family.

The Country and Western evening will be fronted by Dundee band 'Tequila' who are giving their services free of charge.

Added Beryl (60), who said that both she and Andrew were enthusiastic Country and Western fans, "The evening will run from 8pm to 1am and there will be raffles and auctions to raise funds for the cause.

"It will be a big family night and our grandchildren will be there so any of the people wanting to participate would be welcome to take along their youngsters.

"We both enjoy raising money for charity and we will be determined to make Friday a big success.

"We are taking each day is at comes at the moment but our focus is totally on the Institute event."

Tickets are priced at £5 which includes a buffet and people can just go along on the night and pay at the door if they wish.
