Charrette is once in a lifetime opportunity

FIFE Council's Planning Committee was updated on progress on the forthcoming Lochgelly Charrette when the initiative was described as a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Internationally acclaimed designer, Andres Duany and his team, will be heading to Lochgelly between 8th and 13th March to work with the local community, developers, landowners and planners as part of the Scotland Charrette, the Scottish Government's Sustainable Communities Initiative. A charrette is a form of intensive and focused community engagement.

The aim of the process is to capture the vision, values and ideas of the community. Each day the design team works to rapidly progress design options for the Lochgelly area that can then be tested through workshops the next day.

The Miners Institute has been identified as the venue for the design studio with the public meetings taking place in the Lochgelly Town Hall.

Councillor John Beare, chair of Fife Council's Planning Committee and the Council's 'Urban Design Champion', welcomed the progress of the Charrette and added, "I cannot stress enough how exciting an opportunity this is for Lochgelly and Fife.

"We have world leading designers coming to the town and an opportunity for everybody in Lochgelly to influence the way we plan our urban and green spaces in the future.

"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we should do all we can to encourage the local community and interested parties to get involved, work together and feed into the process."
