Two drug dealing brothers caught with cannabis with a street value of over £800,000 have been jailed for a total of more than six years.

At the High Court in Edinburgh yesterday (Wednesday), judge Lord Brailsford said the 163kg seizure was one of the largest he had seen from Fife.

John (25) and Liam (22) Cowan, of 9 Middleton Park, Kelty, were trying to clear a debt after personal problems turned them to drugs, the court heard.

Solicitor advocate Gordon Martin, defending John Cowan, said his client's problems started with a road accident. "This stopped him working," he explained. "He became depressed as a result of that, lost his job, lost his partner and the family home."

Defence advocate Tim Niven Smith, for Liam Cowan, told how his client had studied architectural technology but failed to find work and split with his partner. It was from here his life spiralled out of control and he became addicted to cocaine," said the lawyer.

Police found the drugs at the brothers' home after a tip-off.

The Cowans initially claimed the hundreds of pounds found by officers were the proceeds of their businesses of landscaping and car dealing.

But they admitted being concerned in the supply of the drug between July and November last year.

Advocate depute Hugh Irwin said drug experts valued the bars of cannabis resin at around £140,000 wholesale but, if broken down into one gram deals, the street price could be as high as £817,500.

Lord Brailsford said the drug seizure was "substantial" and prison was inevitable. He sentenced John Cowan to 40 months behind bars and his younger brother was sent down for 35 months.
