PM praises village business park

Prime Minister Gordon Brown was in Kelty to open a groundwork firm's custom built premises at a new industrial estate on Thursday.

Meiklem is the first of what is hoped to be many companies that could open at Kelty Industrial Park.

The site, just off the A92, boasts 110,000 sq ft of office pavilions, light industrial space and large distribution units, which could house up to 26 businesses.

John Meiklem, who employs 50 locals at the new premises, described Kelty Industrial Park as "the best site in Scotland".

He added, "It's thirty seconds from the motorway and it's ideal, whether you're going north, south, east or west."

After opening the new building, Gordon Brown told the Times, "I was pleased to officially open this new building which was purpose built to meet the needs of a successful and growing local company.

"I was also encouraged to hear the plans for the continued development of this business park which will provide much needed quality space to the local and national business users keen to make use of the excellent transport links around Kelty."

Local councillor Alex Rowley also talked up the village, "Kelty is well placed to see further development of both industrial land and tourist-related developments," he said. "It is crucial that all interested parties work together and that Fife Council give a lead by supporting the development of a master plan that will ensure we maximise the opportunities that are available."

John Meiklem, who bought his first digger more than 40 years ago, at the tender age of 17, added, "It was an honour to have Gordon Brown open our new building. We're looking forward to the future, working from Kelty."
