Police have appealed to householders to secure their homes following a spate of break-ins.

People are 'making it easy for opportunist criminals' by leaving doors and windows open, according to Cowdenbeath Area Chief Inspector Ross Bennet.

'Local police are actively trying to combat this problem but there is still much more the public can do to help protect their homes and their families,' he said.

CI Bennet also urged householders to ensure doors, frames and glass panels are strong; five-lever mortise deadlock and bolts are fitted; and sheds are secure.

He added, 'We are coming into the better weather and when in the back garden please remember to lock your front door. As always, I would ask any member of the public who wishes further information to contact their local crime prevention officer.'

Free Home Security surveys can be arranged by contacting Fife Constabulary"s Community Safety Department on 01592 418506.

If you have information on any crime, call Fife Police on 0845 600 5702 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. There may be a reward payable for information received and calls are handled in the strictest confidence.

no matter how well people lock up their properties .. anyone desparate enough will find a way in .agreed that remove temptation is a good way . yet the credit crunch & fast growing unemployment is making any house .. well locked up or not . a vaible target to be burgled .
