A MEETING is being held next week to examine the prospects of a supporters trust being formed at Cowdenbeath Football Club.
People of Cowdenbeath and the surrounding communities will have seen a number of posters on display inviting people to attend a public meeting on Wednesday 24th June at Broad Street Bowling Club. The reason for this meeting is to establish the community based trust.
Said a spokesperson for the organisers of the meeting, 'One of the main talking points in the community in recent months was the proposed move of Cowdenbeath Football Club from Central Park to a newer location elsewhere in the town.
'This raised a number of comments in the community both positive and negative, but the realistic aspect of this whole venture was for the club to survive and to see new retail facilities in the centre of the town.
'Part of this move may see the club break connections with the Stock Car racing, and in the process, losing a valued form of sustainable income which has helped the club survive in recent years. How would the club survive? Would there still be a Cowdenbeath Football Club in three, five or ten years? Who knows? The impact would hit the town and community hard should we lose this institution. These are just some of the questions which need to be addressed.'
The spokesperson added, 'When looking at any football club, if you take the ethos that 'players come and go, managers come and go, directors come and go but through the good times and bad, the fans are there for life'; the only three constants are the community, the Football Club and the fans.
'What is obvious, to an extent, is the club has lost touch with the local community. This is not something that has suddenly happened, but has evolved over the past 20 to 30 years for a variety of reasons.
'Relationships and trusts from both community and club which had existed in the past have been eroded and this must be addressed and where possible rekindled and rebuilt. A community based trust could be the way forward to buck the trend and give a positive feeling to oppose the current apathy in the town, and example being the recent closures of major landmarks on a once busy and prosperous High Street to name but one.
'Love Cowdenbeath Football Club or not, this is something that will affect the town and the local community. To be part of it, you need to show your support. Come down to the meeting and see what is to be said and have your say, you might just make a difference. The meeting is scheduled for a 7:30 start at Broad Street Bowling Club on Wednesday 24th June.'
