The health secretary has offered reassurances over swine flu as the virus is moved to Pandemic Alert Level 6.

Yesterday's decision by the World Health Organisation (WHO) does not signal that swine flu is becoming more serious, Nicola Sturgeon said.

'A move to Level 6...simply means that the extent of global spread now fulfils the definition of a pandemic,' she said.

The number of cases in Scotland now stands at 337, five of which are in Fife.

Ms Sturgeon added, 'We are already operating at a heightened state of readiness, a move to Level 6 will not trigger any material change in our response.'
