HE may be 83 years-old but Peter Webster has no intention in of reducing his involvement in his favourite hobbies, golf and playing the trombone in Dunfermline Town Band.

Peter has been a member of Lochgelly Golf Club for over half a century and last Thursday he got his third hole in one at the course’s 5th, Wee Mary.

He was using his driver at the 137 yard hole and he was delighted to see the ball roll onto the green and into the hole.

Peter was battling it out with other Lochgelly seniors in the Bryce Jackson Stableford competition and the five point haul from holing his tee shot saw him tie for first place with James Brogan, on 37 points, but he was to lose out on a countback.

It was still a day to remember for the former mechanical engineer.

“I took the driver because I had to keep the ball low to avoid the tree branches but it worked well and the ball pitched on the winter green area and went onto the putting surface before falling into the hole,” said Peter.

“It is my third ace at the 5th so it is definitely my favourite hole, but unfortunately it could not win the competition for me.” The club’s Ken Jones said, “It is amazing how Peter does it, to get three holes in one at the 5th is quite a feat.” Peter took up golf when he was 28, 12 years after he took up playing the trombone in Dunfermline Town Band.

And he is now looking forward to the gala season when he is out and about at a series of community events that the band is invited to.

“I love playing golf (three days a week) and also playing the trombone, it is great fun,” said the man who became a mechanical engineer in the mining industry before going to work at Rosyth Dockyard after the pits closed.

“I must admit though that I did not play in competitions until I retired from the Dockyard when I was 58 and now I play three times Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays each week and love every minute of it.” Peter also enjoys playing for the Lochgelly senior team against other clubs’ veterans’ teams in the district and plans to be playing both golf and the trombone for some time to come.
