‘FIGURE skating on four wheels’ might conjure up some bizarre images but a local motorsport venue is promising just that.

Driftland, just outside Lochgelly, is the only drift track in Europe and is believed to be the only one outside of Japan anywhere in the world. Motorsport fans looking for something a bit different will have the chance to experience drifting in a few weeks when Driftland holds a free open day on Sunday 8th March from 12-5pm.

The Times spoke to Jeek Federico, Driftland’s owner, about the venue and what people can expect at the open day. He said, “We are incredibly lucky to have drifting at this venue. We are having an open day on 8th March for fans from last year and also to get some new people coming up and seeing what we do.

“We opened a year past September and it has been really popular. The driver numbers keep going up and up and we’ve attracted people from Australia, the USA and Norway to come and drive.

“We have public days where people can bring their own cars along and also track days where the purpose isn’t speed but to go as sideways as possible. You get the back wheels spinning and smoke pouring off the tyres. On drift experience days people can come and use their cars or have passenger experiences.” A drift track is a fair bit shorter than a normal race track – Driftland had space available and copied inspiration from the many tracks in Japan where the sport started.

Jeek said, “We had been watching videos from Japan for years and years and thought how great it would be to have a place like that here. There’s no timing but there are competitions and it’s more like figure skating – it’s a judged sport.

“People get strapped in a rallied round the track and we’ve had excellent feedback. I’ve not yet met someone who didn’t enjoy it.

“The open day will see our ‘drift taxis’ all day, a spectacle for people that have never seen drifting before, supercar experiences, Atom laps and we’ve got eight or nine different traders signed up who offer window tinting, car detailing and clothing brands. We’ll also have a bouncy castle and face painting for the younger ones.” Driftland’s reputation continues to grow and grow with their Facebook page now boasting an impressive 120,000+ ‘likes’.

Keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming competition in the Times that could see you behind the wheel of a drift car on the open day.
